Acting
Two-year graduate programme, 120 ECTS
The graduate study programme includes, in a broader and more intense way, the material of artistic creation without losing sight of awareness of the organic device. It examines different approaches to drama genres, operates more complex structures of normative personality and its intimate connection with the basic, technical acting face, with a stronger interaction with the audience by providing the possibility of acquiring additional competencies and skills, in particular those in the field of radio broadcasting or film, with which graduates will successfully compete in the labor market. The last year of the programme offers students the possibility of a copyright work on acting classes, whose score, for its exceptional quality, can be included in the repertoire of Croatian leading theatres.
As in the case of undergraduate studies, classes of the graduate study programme of Acting are complimented by seminars, workshops and guest lecturers. At the beginning of each semester, students are provided with a detailed curriculum, which includes seminars, workshops and lectures, as well as with their implementation and a precise and clear pedagogical and artistic assignments.
Cinematography
Two-year graduate programme, 120 ECTS
The graduate levels consists of three divisions: Film and Video Cinematography, Photography and Light Design.
Students who complete the graduate level are able to understand various specialties in the entire field of film, light design and photography, as well as basic rules that govern film production and reception. Additionally, they are qualified to work on multimedia projects as professionals capable of providing such projects with their visual design and identity. Graduates are trained to work as film cinematographers, electronic cinematographers, photographers and light designers, with their competence not only in film’s artistic and professional terms, but also in a broader area of visual design and multimedia projects.
Study programmes that are partially sufficient for attending the graduate study programme of Cinematography:
All undergraduate study programmes at the Academy of Dramatic Art and all artistic and humanistic oriented programmes at the Academy of Fine Arts, Academy of Arts, Faculty of Architecture, School of Design at the Faculty of Architecture, Faculty of Graphic Arts, Faculty of Political Science – the Study of Journalism, and the like.
However, as the Academy of Dramatic Art is a faculty specialized in teaching arts, and individuals employed in this field of work have often never been enrolled into any kind of study related to professional work in film, photography or television, it is possible, along the entrance exam, to design a special programme for individuals in this field of work that have not acquired an adequate degree.
Dramaturgy
Two-year graduate programme, 120 ECTS
The two-year graduate study programme in dramaturgy (MA) offers choice between four emphases, which provide students with an opportunity for focused, intensive and advanced education and training. The especially important difference in relation to the undergraduate programme, focused on imparting knowledge through teaching, is that the graduate programme is primarily focused on project and research activities.
The graduate programme in Dramaturgy offers the following emphases: Performance Dramaturgy, Film Dramaturgy, Theatre Dramaturgy, and Playwriting and Screenwriting.
The graduate programme in Dramaturgy admits students who have completed the undergraduate programme in Dramaturgy, another undergraduate programme of the Academy of Dramatic Art, an undergraduate programme at similar drama and film academies, or another undergraduate programme in the field of humanities and social sciences. It is especially important to emphasize that Dramaturgy students acquire their first experiences in artistic production already over the course of their studies, by way of practical training and internships on projects within or outside the Academy. The Department of Dramaturgy collaborates with a number of professional institutions and organizations, such as theatres, institutes and theatre festivals, film production houses and film festivals, TV and radio stations, publishers, print and internet media, and theatrical, performance and dance companies. After the completion of the graduate programme in Dramaturgy, the Academy’s students are able to work not only as dramaturges in theatres and independent theatrical companies, university professors, researchers at research institutions, journalists and editors in media and professional journals, TV screenwriters, but also as freelance artists (playwrights, screenwriters and dramaturges), freelance theorists and critics, directors, choreographers and performers.
Editing
Two-year graduate programme, 120 ECTS
The graduate study programme consists of two divisions: Editing and Sound Design. When applying for the study programme of Editing, a candidate chooses which division he or she wants to study.
The Editing division provides students with advanced knowledge, skills development and research in expression possibilities in film editing and audiovisual media. Theoretical courses develop and complement the knowledge of film history, theory and aesthetics, while works of art and practical work are based on the editing and visual design of complex documentary, feature and special forms. The emphasis is put on solving dramaturgical tasks involving work with a large amount and different types of audiovisual material, as well as developing skills of conceptualization, visual design and development of printing equipment.
The Sound Design division provides students with advanced knowledge, skills development and research in expression possibilities in sound recording, editing and design in the field of audiovisual media. Theoretical courses include and complement the knowledge of sound history, theory and aesthetics, while the works of art and practical work are based on sound recording, editing and design in complex documentaries, feature and animated films, radio plays and special forms. The art practice requires and develops the ability to integrate and use interdisciplinary knowledge in film, television and multi-media environment. The graduate study of Editing, in both divisions, ends with a written and practical thesis and a final exam.
Film and TV Directing
Two-year graduate programme, 120 ECTS
At the graduate level, the Department of Film and Television Directing opens a possibility to choose one of two division in which students recognize an opportunity for focused, intensive and advanced education and training: graduate study programme of Feature Film and graduate study programme of Documentary Film. Both of these divisions offer students a possibility for further improvement in the most complex creative film tasks in highly professional conditions for teaching film production. Moreover, these programmes systematically profile students in the direction of the most creative achievements, taking into account potential autonomy and artistic personality of students that, within the curriculum and under mentor’s supervision, realize their first feature films (either fiction or documentary).
Production
Two-year graduate programme, 120 ECTS
The MA study of Production is divided into two two-year divisions: the Production of Audiovisual and Multimedia Projects, and the Production of Stage and Performing Arts. The graduate programme at the Academy of Dramatic Arts was established as an overview of advanced production skills, and particularly the creative and artistic aspects of international, European, regional, and in particular, Croatian theatre, film, television and other media. It is organized in a way that stimulates students to generate, implement and place media and artistic products on the market in cultural, media and economic context.
Theatre Directing and Radiophony (Broadcasting)
Two-year graduate programme, 120 ECTS
MA studies are organized and intended as a step forward towards complex theatrical work. During these two years, students direct performances based entirely on their own ideas (adaptation of a novel, play, poetry or non-verbal theatre). They useold Croatian texts and prepare their final exam that should be staged in a professional theatre. Students who got their BA degrees elsewhere direct an additional performance in the first semester of the programme. While earning the required 120 ECTS, students continue with their theoretical education and are encouraged to prepare their work on a more professional level, which should reach its peak at the time of the final exam. Additionally, students direct two radio-plays during their studies.
